Animal Residents at Powers Little Campground

Gopher Tortoise

Nearby the property a couple of gopher tortoises have set up a little getaway of their own. The gopher tortoise is considered an endangered species due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation caused by human activities. Conservation efforts are being undertaken to protect and restore their habitats and prevent further population decline.

It is important not to disturb them, as it is a threatened species and their burrows are critical for the survival of many other animals in the ecosystem.

American Bald Eagle

We have a few American bald eagles that stop to visit from time to time. They are a majestic birds of prey known for their striking appearance, with a white head and tail, dark brown body, and powerful talons. Due to habitat destruction and hunting, the bald eagle population declined significantly in the 20th century, leading to its classification as an endangered species. Thanks to conservation efforts, the bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list in 2007.
